The Anabaptists was a group of reformers that rejected the popular concept of infant baptism. After these people became known as "Mennonites” (a tribute to a young Catholic priest from Holland named Menno Simons that joined the Anabaptist movement).
However, there were the followers of Jacob Amman (Anabaptists too) that had differences (they did not agree with all beliefs), led to Amman's split with the Mennonites in 1693. His followers were later called Amish.
Both were severely persecuted throughout Europe, so they migrated to the mountains of Switzerland and southern Germany. And began the Amish tradition of farming and holding their worship services in homes rather than churches.
Nowadays, they are in 23 states. Like their families are large the total Amish population has more than doubled since 1960 to over 85,000. And almost all children do not leave the church.

ebonics
Ebonics is the mixture of ebony (a tree that if stipulated to use to represent the Afro-American race) and phonics (of phonetic). In other words this means a type of dialect created by Afros-American in the states of the South of the United States, that now is known in everybody due to expansion of the expressions of this dialect.
Ebonics concentrates proper rules of grammar, actualy, changes of the formal rules of the English.
example:
The verb "you be" disappears
English: You are crazy!
Ebonics: You crazy!
Negation with ain’t
English: You are no hero, friend.
Ebonics: You ain’t no hero, man.
you can see it in one music:
[Verse 1: 50 Cent]You can have it your way, how do you want it
You gon' back that thing up or should i push up on it
Temperature rising, okay lets go to the next level
Dance floor jam packed, hot as a teakettle
I'll break it down for you now, baby it's simple
If you be a nympho, I'll be a nympho
In the hotel or in the back of the rental
On the beach or in the park, it's whatever you into
I Got dat magic stick, I'm the love doctor
Have your friends teasin you 'bout how sprung I gotcha
Wanna show me how you work it baby, no problem
Get on top then get to bouncing round like a low rider
I'm a seasons vet when it come to this shit
After you broke up a sweat you can play with the stick
I'm tryin to explain baby the best way I can
I melt in your mouth girl, not in your hands
hahaha

Ebonics, again.
Hi, Vanessa
I’m astonished and upset!
I’ve written a small text in order to translate it into Ebonics and post it in our Blog.
I’ve Googled and found several “Ebonics translators”. I’ve tried one and the result was this:
My text:
Last Friday I went to Fortaleza with my husband and we had a good time! Fortaleza is such a beautiful city with wonderful beaches and a nice weather. People were friendly. We went to a comedy program and laughed a lot. We came back on Sunday. I hope I could come back very soon.
The translation:
Last Friday I went ta Fortaleza wit muh husband and we had a crunk time! Fortaleza be such a beautiful city wit wonderful beaches and a tis-ight weather. People were homiely. We went ta a comedy program and laughed a lot. We came back on Sunday. I hope I could come back very soon. - aww yea foo.
But, I’m a very suspicious person and I’ve decided to try another translator:
Last Friday meh goed ta Fortaleza with mah husband an’ we waz havin’ a good time! Fortaleza iz such a beautiful city with wonderful beaches an’ a nice weather. niggas waz friendly. We goed ta a comedy program an’ laughed a lot. We came back on Sunday. meh hope meh could come back very soon.
And another:
Yo... Last friddy-dizzy I'z bailed ta Fortaleza wit muh husband n' we not havin' a good time! Fortaleza be such a beautiful city wit wonderful beaches n' a nice weather. peeps were friendly. We bailed ta a comedy program n' laughed a lot. We came back on Sunday. I'z hope I'z could come back very soon.
Another:

So, I quit! What is this?? I think, I could find thousands of different translations to the same text. How can I recognize the right one?

Ebonics
Last class, at ABA, we beginning to learn about “Ebonics” also called African American Vernacular English.
It’s a language, a variety of English, with a coherent system of signs- a grammar of elements and rules- which is used in a regular way for purposes of communication, and also for social symbolic purposes.
Ebonics isn’t slang. Slang refers to a relatively small set of vocabulary items which are ephemeral. Slang doesn’t have a grammar of rules of pronunciation.

Ebonics is characteristically spoken by working class US African Americans, in their community, at occasions calling for intimacy or informality.
Many people think Ebonics is wrong English or slang. Many negative statements about Ebonics are based on a lack of knowledge about language and dialects.
People without linguistic training are seldom aware that they have languages prejudices. They commonly make assumptions about the inferiority of some dialects, like AAVE, and the superiority of others, like British English.
Standard English became the standard for historical and political reasons, not because it was better at communicating. It is the speakers who have power; the status of the dialect merely reflects the social and economics status of the group using it.

Emigration
Most of the people from 3rd world countries, like latin american countries including Brazil, and some asians coutries too, like to move themselves to US to try to start a new life, but a travel to US its expensive and most of those people doesnt have money to pay for it, so they try the harder way to get in the US, a illigal way throught the border of the country most of the time from Mexico, but its a very dangerous way, some people die trying to do this, and those that made it have in lots of way a very hard life, but some have a happy and.
There are some neighbor at NY where emigrants from many nationalities live toghether in peace but eachone with your own culture, there is respect between them this is like "salad bowl".

Amish
Amish are people that by choice, still living like their the people lived hundred years ago, like using horse-drawn power, and wearing old clothes.
Their famiies and farms are their top priorites, second only to God, they bilieve in the literal interpretation of The Word of God ( The Bible ), they take seriously the Biblical commands to separate themselves from the things of the world. They believe worldliness can keep them from being close to God, and can introduce influences that could be destructive to their communities and to their way of life.
The Amish have long preferred farming as a way of life.

Amish beginning
Sorry, I'm late again!
And I've read what people said about amish over here... and I don't have too many things to add, so I diceded to talk about their beginning, cause I don't remenber anything wrote about this.
The Amish was founded as a reformer group by Jacob Amman (*1644 + 1720), in Switzerland, Europe. They was trying to restore some of the early pratices of the Mennonites. So, all their faith and praticies came from the writings of Menno Simons (*1496 +1561).
During de 17th century part of them has separated, cause of the several disciplins of the Mennonites. Part of them went to Pennsylvana, United States, by the beggining of the 18th century, starting their own culture over there.
Today there is about 180,000 adults in the US Amish comunity, in 22 states. Almost everyone borned Amish.

answering the question
Vanessa
You commented my post and made a question: How long can a person be shunned?
The answer is: A person remains shunned until either to die or repent.

Hello, Vanessa. I missed the class on 7th april. I knew that the lesson was about the amish people, so I decided to write about the amish education.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The children walk or ride pony carts to go to the school. And one of the older students will take a full sized buggy from home and pick up other children on their way to school, however it’s not regurlaly.
Some times, the parochial schools aren’t available. So, the children are sent to public school.
The education a big part of home life, where the children learn about farming and homemaking skills that are considered an important part of an Amish child's upbringing.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Amish Education
The education is strongly valued by amish people. Because of religious principles, they are exempt from the state compulsory attendance until the eighth grade. In this period, their education is basically writing, reading and mathematics, as well as they learning about amish amish history and values.
Schools are provided by many amish community. It’s common a local farmer donate land for a school house and the community will assist in building it. In general, the teachers are young women and they teach the children for a few years before marrying.
Finding good teachers is so hard and in some cases a local mother will have to add teaching to her list of responsibilities until they can find an older girl that will be able to teach well. It’s unusual that a man will take the responsibility of educating the children.

Tragedy Strikes the Amish World - Great example of forgiveness
Dating from October 2nd, 2006
"Tragedy struck the Amish community when an armed gunman shot 10 young girls in a local Amish school, then committed suicide."
"[...]The Amish were obviously shocked by this incident and they collectively grieved for the children and their families. But that shock extended far beyond just the Amish. This tragedy rocked all of Lancaster County. The day after the shooting, 1600 gathered for a prayer service at one local church, while hundreds more met at another church for prayer. All Lancaster County shared in the horror and grief of this tragedy. As one Amishman said, -Today, we're all Amish.-[...]."
"[...]The afternoon of the shooting an Amish grandfather of one of the girls who was killed expressed forgiveness toward the killer. That same day Amish neighbors visited the Roberts family to comfort them in their sorrow and pain. The Roberts family (family of the murderer) was invited to one of the Amish funerals. And Amish mourners outnumbered the non-Amish at Charles Roberts' funeral.[...]"
"In a world at war and in a society that often points fingers and blames others, this reaction was unheard of. The Amish culture closely follows the teachings of Jesus, who taught his followers to forgive one another, to place the needs of others before themselves, and to rest in the knowledge that God is still in control and can bring good out of any situation. Love and compassion toward others is to be life's theme. Vengeance and revenge is to be left to God."

Amish People - Curiosities
This time I'll be postig some cultural curiosities abou the Amish. I hope you all enjoy!
About the use of electricity
"Amish people interpret linking with electrical wires as a connection with the world - and the Bible tells them they are not to be "conformed to the world." (Romans 12:2) In 1919 the Amish leaders agreed that connecting to power lines would not be in the best interest of the Amish community. They did not make this decision because they thought electricity was evil in itself, but because easy access to it could lead to many temptations and the deterioration of church and family life[...]"
About the use of beards
For the Amish, the beard is a mark of an adult Amishman. In other hand, the mustache, throughout history, had been associated with militarist issues and therefore are forbidden among the Amish people.
About the black hats
"[...]in Lancaster County, the Amish men wear broad-brimmed hats of black felt. The width of the brim and hat band and the height and shape of the crown are variables which gauge the orthodoxy of the group and individual wearer. A wide brim, low crown, and narrow hat band denotes the oldest and most traditional style. Within church groups, one's age and status is often reflected by the dimensions of one's hat. For warm weather, straw hats are preferred by plain men."
About dolls for the little girls
"[...] most of the dolls for little girls were rag dolls without faces. The Amish have retained this custom. [...] The reason is similar to the refusal to have pictures of people and is linked to the second commandment. (Exodus 20:4-6) At an early age children are learning not to have images, likenesses, idols."
About Musical Instruments
" [...] Musical instruments are forbidden by the Old 0lder Amish community. Playing an instrument would be "worldly." It is contrary to the spirit of "Glassenheit" (humility), and would stir up the emotions of those who are involved."

The Amish People - Modern Issues
Hi people! This is my first time posting on the blog. Sorry teacher but our friend Neide has been quite intimidating these days, hehe, she posted almost everything! But I think that this is no excuse to my absence here... anyway... sorry and congratulations for you Neide!
In this post I will be talking about some aspects of the Amish people. This topic was designed to me in the class about the Amish community. I think that this topic is very overused, so I will focus on some interesting curiosities I hope this can be of some help.
Pennsylvania Dutch Country is a territory of the USA that is known for being the homeland of a very singular kind of community, the Amish. They live a very special way of life, with no modern-like things and almost no contact with the "exterior civilization".
Some people would think that they stopped in the middle of time. In fact, this is a wrong idea. They refuse to use the modernity of the actual civilization because, for them, this could be the beginning of the destruction of their so loved way of life. They don't accept technologies that turn their life more easy but they accept the ones that turn their days more "livable". One great example is the one regarding the medicines:
"Most Amish and Mennonite groups to not oppose modern medicine. Their readiness to seek health services varies from family to family. Nothing in the Amish understanding of the Bible forbids them from using modern medical services, including surgery, hospitalization, dental work, anesthesia, blood transfusions, etc. They do believe, however, that good health, both physical and mental, is a gift from God and requires careful stewardship on the part of the individual[...]"

AMISH WEDDINGS ....RESUME
Family is the core element in the Amish church, and choosing a mate is the most important decision in an Amishman's life. The Text below resumes this ritual."For many of the Old Order Amish young people, "pairing up" begins at Sunday evening singings, The boy will take the girl home in his buggy. The couple is secretive about their friendship and courtship. Several days to two weeks before the wedding, the couple is "published" in church and their intentions to marry are made known. Weddings are held in November, or at the very latest in early December. That's after the busy fall harvesting season is over. Weddings are on Tuesdays or Thursdays--the least busy days of the week on an Amish farm. The wedding is held at the home of the bride and the sermon and ceremony will last about four hours. Weddings usually begin at 8:30 a.m. There are no kisses, rings, photography, flowers or caterers. There are usually 200 or more guests. After the wedding there will be a delicious dinner of chicken, filling, mashed potatoes, gravy, ham, relishes, canned fruit, plus many kinds of cookies, cakes and pies."
Some others interesting things are:
The couple's first night together is spent at the bride's home becausethey must get up early the next day to help clean the house.
Their honeymoon is spent visiting all their new relatives on the weekendsthroughout the winter months ahead. This is when they collect the majorityof their wedding gifts.
No one in the bridal party carries flowers.
There is a sweet food called tapioca pudding.

Ordnung
Hello Guys,
In order to understand Amish culture it’s essential that you understand the term - ORDNUNG. So here’s a definition:
Ordnung is the Amish rules of living. It is the German word for order, arrangement, organization, system. Every Amish church has its own set of rules. These rules are both written and unwritten. Because the Amish have no central church government, each community administers their own guidelines. Once a rule has been adopted, it is nearly impossible to have it rescinded or changed.
Some of the most common rules are: separation from the world, hard work, a woman's submission to her husband, clothing, refusal to buy life insurance, and many more.
The Ordnung may also contain a set of behavioral rules. The purpose of these rules is to live a simple life devoted to God, the family, and community, always following God's laws. Outsiders think mostly of restrictions like no electricity or automobiles. However many of their gudelines are for guarding a person's character. The attempt is to try to prevent pride, envy, vanity, laziness, dishonesty, etc.

The Faith of the Amish
The Amish believe in God. They believe in one God that eternally exists as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. They believe in the Bible as the inspired word of God.
They believe that God loved the world so much he gave his only son to die on the cross.
And the men who have faith in the shed blood of Jesus are reconciled to God.
They think the Church is separated from the State.
The Amish believe in the ORDNUNG. It is a code of conduct that regulates private, public and ceremonial life. The church maintains it by tradition rather than by systematic or explicit rules.
The Amish are baptized when they are adults and voluntarily accepted to do this. So, they commit themselves to a life of obedience to God and the church. Those who break their baptismal vows are shunned by the Old Order Amish. But a shunned person can receive redemption and come back into the fellowship again. The family of a shunned member is expected also to shun that person. This is done by not eaten at the same table with the shunned.
The Amish are committed to a lifestyle of peace and non-violence. Death isn’t threatening to Amish as Christians. People who practice a lifestyle of peace wouldn’t resort to force and violence in a crisis situation like the confrontation with a murderer or a war. Christians don’t choose a non-violent approach to conflict because they think it will always work.
Christians choose this approach because of their commitment to Jesus as a Lord.

Hi guys,
Last Saturday ( March 31) we worked with the Amish and as I said here it is a way to practice your listening Skill. Make sure to do the listening and write your answers on a separate piece of paper with your name to be given to me. To access the listening you have to click on the link below.
How do the Amish heat their houses and where do they get their water?
How do some Amish earn money?
What do the Amish usually eat?
Where did the people in Lancaster come from?
How many states are there settlements of Amish people?
What kind of crops do the Amish produce?
What kind of animals do the Amish raise?
Who makes the wedding dress, what color is it?
What does this person do with the dress after the marriage?
How many children do most Amish families have?
What are some the Amish beliefs?
